For the past few months, I’ve been working on art project that means so much to me. 14 incredible women have allowed me to photograph them nude for an art series that embraces and celebrates our diversity as women. Images by Kate Cornfoot Photography
If you were to intuit what beauty is from our mainstream media, you’d come up with a pretty narrow definition. With this series, I’m stating unequivocally that beauty - being beautiful - is so much more interesting, varied and uplifting than that definition. Beauty transcends body type, age, sexuality and cultural background. I’ve learned so much from the women I’ve collaborated with. Over cups of tea, and long chats before each session commenced, we’ve talked all manner of issues - fertility, eating disorders, relationships, motherhood, cancer, love, ageing, friendship. The women featured range from their 30s through to their 70s; one of the greatest revelations to me has been that older women tend to have a more positive attitude to their bodies than much younger women. In a society that worships youth, it’s awesome to discover that our attitudes to our bodies - and our minds, our hearts and our selves - can get softer, kinder and more accepting as we grow and age. I’ve posted a few sneak-peeks on my Facebook page, to give people a little glimpse of what I’m working on, but I’m holding off revealing the images in all their glory until an exhibition evening in November. Then, we’ll be unveiling the images, celebrating this journey I’ve been on with 14 incredible women, and having a broader conversation about self-love and self-acceptance - my true aim in this undertaking. Watch this space for more details of our beautiful, heart-full art evening coming soon! There's also a link to a little video of me setting up for a shoot on Instagram Love Kate x
